Is it cold in Alaska?

Alaska’s most popular season runs mid-May to September, coinciding with the state’s warmest weather. In these summer months the temperature averages a pleasant 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter Alaska can get quite cool, but dressing in layers is a small price to pay for the breathtaking wilderness of this great Northern state.

What should I pack?

Dressing in lightweight layers is always a smart choice while traveling. This way you can adjust for location and activity, and ensure you’ll always be comfortable. Sturdy shoes are a must if you want to get out and explore the wilderness.

Is it true that it doesn’t get dark in Alaska?

It does get dark in Alaska, but maybe not as early as you’re used to! Alaska’s daylight can last between 15 and 21 hours depending on location and time of year.

Is Alaska a good destination for families?

Alaska’s abundance of activities is perfect for families wanting a unique family vacation. Even kids with very particular tastes are bound to find something to love with wildlife, outdoors, and cultural sights aplenty. Alaska is also great for an educational experience – your kids will have the time of their lives while learning about nature, history, wildlife, and geology.

I’d love to see Mt. McKinley, where is the best place for viewing?

To experience the majesty of this immense mountain, explore Talkeetna and Denali State Park. For the truly adventurous, your Fresh Tracks agent can arrange an up close and personal flightseeing tour.

Will I see wildlife?

Wildlife is abundant in Alaska’s wilderness, and you have a great chance of seeing bears, moose, eagle, seals, whales, and plenty of other fascinating creatures.

Are there a lot of insects?

Although largely wilderness, Alaska doesn’t suffer the bug problem you might be imagining. Most harmless but irritating bugs will avoid you at the hint of mosquito repellant, easily purchased in Alaska and abroad.

What’s the accommodation like in Alaska?

Accommodation in our packages ranges from fairly rustic camping to basic lodges and comfortable hotels. It is important to note that Alaska’s appeal is in its outdoor attractions and that luxury resorts aren’t too common. Most hotels are completely comfortable 3 and 4 star range properties.

Can I take the train to Alaska?

Unfortunately, there is currently no passenger train running north from Canada into Alaska. However, upon arrival in Alaska there are plenty of opportunities for once in a lifetime travel by rail. Explore your options with a Fresh Tracks agent.

Do I need a passport to travel to Alaska?

Passport requirements depend on your citizenship. If you are a US citizen traveling directly to Alaska, you do not need a passport. If you are a US citizen intending to spend time in Canada as part of your vacation to Alaska, you will need a passport. All other travelers will require a passport.

Are my transfers included?

The inclusion of transfers depends on your package. For answers relevant to your trip, please refer to the “included” section of your itinerary or ask your Fresh Tracks consultant.

Are your tours escorted?

With most tours, you are your own guide. Independent packages feature pre-arranged accommodation, transportation, and activities detailed in a day-by-day itinerary. This gives you the freedom to make certain choices as to where to spend your time, while ensuring you have the security of having the essentials arranged for you.

Small group activity trips are the exception to this, with experienced guides taking charge of small groups of travelers. In independent trips, specific sightseeing portions will be narrated by guides specific to each area.

What isn’t included in my package cost?

The major necessities of your package are covered. However, in order to ensure you flexibility and options, certain things are left to your discretion. This can vary from package to package, but standard exclusions are:

  • Travel Insurance
  • Meals other than mentioned
  • Transfers other than mentioned
  • Gratuities
  • Airfare to and from starting point

Please refer to the “Included/Not Included” portion of your travel itinerary, or consult with your Fresh Tracks agents for clarification.

Can I alter the package or change the itinerary?

In most cases, the answer is yes! Your Fresh Tracks consultant will be glad to customize your trip based on exactly what you want to do and how you want to do it. You can change hotels, add nights, include optional tours – the possibilities seem endless. The only limitations to your dream vacation are activity schedules and your own imagination.
